Local Authorities were today called upon to work with government. The call was made by the Vice President, who is also Minister of Finance, Mr. Ndaba Nkosinathi Gaolathe, at the Budget Pitso for Local Authorities held at Adansonia Hotel in Francistown. The objective of the Pitso was to inform the delegates that Government is willing to listen to them, to learn from them and take their feedback seriously as they finalise the 2026/27 national budget.
Delegates were encouraged to come up with ideas, which can take the country forward. Mr. Gaolathe said the country needs leadership that strengthens delivery and confidence, leadership that priorities maintenance over prestige. He further indicated that the country needs leadership that makes it easier for enterprise to operate through practical planning, disciplined execution and predictable local systems.
Local Authorities were reminded to demand clarity, coherence and support from national leadership. The Vice President further requested the dignitaries to give feedback and guidance on what reforms will work in practice and also to give insights on which local investments will yield the greatest returns.
Lastly, the Vice President indicated that the 2026/27 budget must be more than a financial document, it must be a pivot stabilising the economy, protecting the vulnerable, creating jobs and rebuilding confidence.
